We'd been planning NYC trip for six months almost and had everything planned and ready. Then 10 days before the trip our son, 12 yo, got sick. I figured our plans were off, and fortunately he was getting better. It was our son first trip to NYC. And I had done for our kids guide to New York.
Airline lost one of our bags – wouldn’t think this would happen as it’s only a 1 hour flight.
We arrived late in the evening. We stayed at NYhotel the Affinia 50- highly recommend it, very family friendly nyc hotel for kids and in a great location. This is a no smoking new york hotel. We stayed in a deluxe suite with a balcony on the 18th floor for a very reasonable price. We could smell the aroma of Japanese BBQ, Spanish/Mex, Italian, and, Smith & Wollensky's - all across the street. Tube stations are no more than 3 blocks away and there are several to choose from, so you can go where you need to easily and efficiently - just like a real New Yorker. Plenty of nyc taxi service are also available. The desk personnel were very friendly, and even mentioned that they heard we had a birthday to celebrate this weekend. Our son was shocked that "somebody in New York" knew it was his birthday. We will be staying at this NYChotels again on our next trip.
Thunderstorms in Venice can bring very heavy venice rain but no normally very long lasting in the summer. If it does rain so hard as to drive you indoors there are lots Venice things to do into to escape the rain. Even if you are already thinking about the big venice museums when you have venice vacation. In the Summer it's more short sharp showers than prolonged rain. Venice travel guide says that there are so many beautiful Churches and Museums and forecasts at the end of the day are not always right. Several hundred churches, most of which are free and most of which are decorate with wonderful art are venice activities.
You can also buy a E9 venice pass to the Chorus Churches such as Basilica dei Frari which are the most treasured churches. Several schools as Scuola di San Rocco which are sort of the equivalent of Guild houses, also decorated by famous Venetian artists. Many venice museums including the Academia which in my opinion is the one not to be missed. Some like the Guggenheim but I was not very engaged by what it had to offer. The ducal palace and prisons. Shops of course, especially around the market area. Musical soirees in the evening.

We stayed at Venice hotel Residence Corte Grimani. It was situated in an old palace within an old private courtyard away from the coming and going of tourists, and yet in the very center, a 2-minute walk from Saint Mark's Square and from Rialto Bridge. Our venice apartments had a small balcony right over the canal which was on one on the main Gondoliers routes which passed by every few minutes. We just loved having our venice meals overlooking the canal and watching people pass by over Goldoni Bridge and listening to the gondoliers singing.
